Vampires: For ages vampires have been monsters of myth and folklore, the undead revenants that prowl the night in search of humans to feast upon. The word “undead” refers to a creature that should be dead but is still active within the realm of the living. This is not an accurate definition of the vampire. Vampires do indeed need blood to survive; it keeps them from aging, keeps them strong, and if a vampire stopped drinking it, all the years that they have lived would catch up with them in a matter of days. They would lose their ability to erase human memory, would lose their preternatural sense of smell and hearing, their enhanced speed and strength. They would still hold some abilities, such as their power to control certain small animals, such as dogs, rats and snakes…
But how did these powers come about, how were the vampires created? It was traced back to a Slavic gypsy, who cast a curse onto a pregnant woman who scoffed at her street performance. Months later, when she gave birth, there was no afterbirth, not a trace of blood from the mother or on the newborn boy, who they named Veles. He had pointed teeth and refused to suckle, and although this was concerning, he was otherwise normal, and the midwife deemed him to be perfectly healthy. For several months he ate nothing, drank nothing, but learned to speak and walk very quickly. He cried whenever he was brought outside, and immediately stopped when he was indoors. Doctors were often called in to make sure the baby was doing fine, and they always said he was happy and healthy. One night, however, the father of Veles heard a noise outside his window. It was a cat screeching. He got up and went outside to chase the cat away, but found his son instead, sucking from a dead stray cat’s neck. Horrified, the father backed away from his bloodsucking son, but before he could turn to run, the babe looked up, their eyes met, and the father collapsed.
He had no memory of that moment, no idea why they had found him on their doorstep, or why his son had gone missing.
Veles did not avidly drink blood until the age of sixteen, and because of this he had grown to have the appearance of a boy around thirteen. At this point in his life he had decided he needed more vampires by his side…
The Coven: The first group of vampires created by the original vampire, Veles. He discovered that if he drained a certain amount of blood from a human, then replaced it with his blood, it would turn them into a vampire. He hardly ever wondered why this occurred; maybe it was like a virus, or perhaps it had something to do with DNA… but either way, he liked having minions.
The Coven was made up of seven vampires from across Europe. Their names were Jarek, Dmitri, Sevilla, Aimé, Giuseppe, Esme and Veles. Sevilla and Esme were the only two women in The Coven.
The Coven ran rather smoothly for almost two hundred years. All of the members preferred human blood to animal blood, except for Sevilla and Dmitri, who didn’t enjoy hurting humans, then erasing their memories. Veles saw no problem with this, but Jarek and Esme saw it as tainting the pure vampire blood that ran through them.
Fourteen years passed, but one day, Jarek discovered that Dmitri was in a relationship with a human woman. Furious, he investigated the situation and discovered that not only was he married to her, but he had two children, a son and a daughter. He reported this to Veles, and it was decided among The Coven that Dmitri’s wife and children should be killed, as they knew too much about vampires, and the children were half-breeds. Sevilla told Dmitri of The Coven’s plan before they had a chance to act, and the five of them fled Europe. This was when The Oath was made. True members of The Coven would never taint their pallet with the blood of animals, would never conceive a child with a human, and would always remain loyal to the blood of the first vampire, the blood of Veles.
Half-Breeds: Part human, part vampire, they still need to drink blood for nourishment, to stay alive and to stay powerful. They do age, however, but very slowly once they have reached adolescence. Sunlight does not hurt them, and they can stay in light for extended periods of time. There are now more of them than there once were, as The Oath was made long ago, and it is now the twenty-first century. Dmitri and Sevilla’s descendants all have a bit of vampire in them, and although they may not be exactly one half human one half vampire they are still referred to as half-breeds. Members of The Coven track and hunt them, so where you find a half-breed you're likely to find a Coven member.
Vampire Hunters: Those who have encountered a vampire and lived are usually vengeful and want the abominations dead. These few have done their research and know a vampire when they see one, as well as how to kill them, so for The Coven, they are another set of deadly enemies. Although the original seven Coven members have been killed off by these hunters, and many of the original hunters have been killed off by time, they have both left their descendants to finish what they started.
Strays: Pure-blooded vampires who choose not to follow the coven are commonly refered to as strays. They don't belong anywhere, and are enemies of the coven and vampire hunters. Half Breeds put up with them, generally, most likely because both of these groups have enough enemies to deal with.
Humans: Average humans are usually oblivious of the warfare between their race, the half-breeds and the pure bloods. Every now and then, however, an unsuspecting human will stumble upon the knowledge of this feud, unraveling a whole new world of mystery and danger.
Aaaand that’s basically all you need to know, I think! If I’ve left any holes in the plot please point them out for me and I will fix them. Thanks for reading!
